Why did you decide to become a counselor?
I have always been deeply curious about people, relationships, and the experience of housing our souls in human bodies. I am entering the psychotherapy world from a career in massage therapy and energy work. I love these modalities and helping people find healing in their bodies.
Over the years, I felt a pull towards counseling that I could not ignore. My own experiences in therapy taught me a lot about finding my voice and feeling alive in my body. Our voices and our presence have power and I am becoming a counselor in order to use that power to create kindness and healing.
What are your favorite parts of being a counselor-in-training?
I love getting to know new people and learning different ways to live. One of my favorite aspects of the training process for counseling is learning from my colleagues and hearing different perspectives.
How do you practice your own self-care?
My favorite forms of self care include engaging in my own therapy, spending time with people who light me up, and sleeping in when my body needs it.
What’s something about mental health you wish more people knew about?
I wish people knew how unbelievably beautiful their stories are. As I get to know clients, I get to hear about their life cycles, wins, loves, and losses. And the story arc that develops for everyone is so beautiful and amazingly tailored to them.
How do you enjoy life?
I enjoy life by traveling and experiencing as much of our planet as I can. I also love to romanticize mundane moments in life. Putting on a fancy outfit to wash the dishes and finding joy in daily activities allows me to surrender to the flow of life and laugh at the beauty and absurdity of it all.
If you weren’t a therapist, what would you choose to do for work instead?
If I wasn’t a therapist, I would continue in massage and energy work. However, in another life I think I would have loved to be a professional dancer or painter. To fly through the air or create works of art that move people feels very appealing to me.
